New European rules on “organic wine”

Brussels, 8 February 2012 European Commission – Press release

The Standing Committee on Organic Farming (SCOF) has agreed on the new European rules on “organic wine”, which will be published in the Official Journal in the coming weeks. Under this new regulation, which will apply from the 2012 harvest onwards, organic wine producers will be able to use the term “organic wine” on their labels. The labels must also display the EU organic logo and the code number of their certification body, and must comply with other wine labelling rules as well. Although rules already exist for “wine made from organic grapes”, these do not cover oenological practices, that is, the entire process from grape to wine. Wine was the only sector not fully covered by EU organic farming legislation under Regulation (EC) No 834/2007.

Following the vote of the Standing Committee on Organic Farming, Dacian Cioloș, EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, stated:

“I welcome the fact that we have finally reached an agreement on this issue, because it was important to establish harmonised rules that guarantee a clearer offer to consumers, who are increasingly interested in organic products. I am pleased that we have set rules that clearly distinguish organic wine from conventional wine, as is the case with other organic products. In this way, consumers can be sure that any ‘organic wine’ has been produced according to more stringent production standards.

The new rules have the advantage of offering greater transparency and making recognition easier for consumers. They will not only help to facilitate the internal market, but will also strengthen the international position of EU organic wines, as many other wine-producing countries (the USA, Chile, Australia or South Africa) have already established rules on organic wines. With this legislation, EU organic farming has been completed and now covers all agricultural products.”

At Deyute, this news further strengthens our confidence in our products. It brings together two products as natural as wine and jute, creating a strong ecological alliance that helps to protect the environment.
